Tatra is a truck manufacturer from the Czech Republic, named after the Tatra Mountains located within the country. Although Tatra once produced passenger cars in its history, today it mainly focuses on truck manufacturing. Compared with the well-known “big seven” European truck brands, Tatra has taken a rather unconventional path. Its air-cooled engines, central backbone tube chassis, and swinging half-axle technology have become Tatra’s most distinctive features, bringing its trucks exceptional reliability and outstanding off-road capability.
For the civilian truck market, off-road performance is not the top priority—fuel efficiency and comfort matter more. Because of its unique technical orientation, Tatra’s market share in civilian trucks is relatively small, but the brand is highly favored by special departments and the military. The subject of today’s article is one such Tatra military fuel tanker lorry, sourced from the Romanian Army, mainly used to refuel helicopters and various small aircraft. Let’s take a closer look.
This military tanker truck is built on the Tatra Phoenix chassis. Within Tatra’s lineup, the Phoenix is quite special: its cab, powertrain, and other components are sourced from Dutch manufacturer DAF, while the chassis and axles are Tatra’s own. This combination not only ensures excellent off-road performance but also provides better fuel economy and comfort, making it suitable for industries such as mining and construction.
For Tatra, the birth of the Phoenix series helps it maintain a foothold in the civilian market while preparing to expand into demanding niche sectors. The significance is akin to a phoenix rising from the ashes. The tanker featured today is based on the previous generation Phoenix, whose prototype was DAF’s CF series. Today, while DAF has moved on to its new-generation NGD models, the latest Phoenix trucks have also adopted the XDC/XFC platform.
Even though it belongs to the earlier generation, this Phoenix is still quite attractive. Its exterior carries over the original styling of the DAF CF series, with a trapezoidal blacked-out grille running from the bumper up to beneath the windshield, contrasting sharply with the military green body. Headlights and fascia details feature smooth curves, enhancing the overall harmony of the design.
The familiar red circular Tatra badge sits proudly at the top of the grille, replacing the original “DAF” lettering and asserting its identity. To its left lies the vehicle’s identification plate, which uses numerical codes to mark the type of cargo being carried—part of the European standard configuration for hazardous goods transport.
Despite being positioned for the civilian market, the Phoenix still delivers outstanding off-road performance. Its high ground clearance improves approach and departure angles. A silver skid plate under the bumper protects the oil sump, while all chassis components are mounted above the lowest point of the frame for added protection. 2 spotlights are mounted at the base of the A-pillars, providing extra illumination in the field.
In Europe, Tatra trucks are often called the “King of Off-Road”, thanks to their unique mechanical layout—most notably the swinging half-axles. As the name suggests, each half-shaft moves independently, allowing maximum wheel articulation and ground contact. This greatly enhances adaptability to rough terrain, maintaining traction and reducing body roll. One trademark visual effect of this suspension is that Tatra trucks often appear “toe-inward” (wheels angled inwards) when unladen or lightly loaded.
Another signature feature is the central backbone tube chassis, which replaces the conventional ladder frame. The differentials, driveshafts, and related components are enclosed within the backbone tube like armor, making them resistant to impacts. This structure also acts as a strong load-bearing frame, convenient for mounting heavy superstructures.
The fuel tanker truck has an 8×8 drive layout and is equipped with a CTIS (Central Tire Inflation System). Combined with its short overhangs, it achieves excellent off-road mobility, whether on mud or sand.
For the powertrain, the Phoenix adopts the same setup as the DAF CF series. It is powered by a PACCAR MX-13 inline-six diesel engine, producing 530 horsepower and 2,600 Nm of torque, paired with a ZF transmission. This setup is very common in commercial trucks—reliable, cost-effective, and easy to maintain.
The tanker superstructure is built by Czech company KOBIT, featuring a center-mounted tank and rear-mounted pump. This design places the tank closer to the vehicle’s center of mass, improving stability when maneuvering. The rear pump allows fueling from the left, right, or rear, offering more flexibility than center-mounted systems. The trade-off is a longer power transmission path, which increases structural weight and complexity.
This particular body model is CN 15 A, where “15” denotes a total fuel capacity of 15,000 liters, enough to service multiple helicopters and small aircraft. To reduce liquid surge during movement, the tank is divided into three 5,000-liter compartments, which lowers the risk of rollover when accelerating, braking, or turning.
The rear pump is supplied by FAUDI, with a flow rate of 100–350 liters per minute.
Inside the pump compartment, a fuel meter displays the total amount dispensed.
A control panel allows operation: the 1st switch controls compartment lighting, the 2nd and 3rd adjust engine RPM (thus controlling PTO power output to the pump), and the fourth engages the PTO itself.
Besides refueling aircraft from its own load, the tanker can also draw fuel from underground storage depots and pump it into aircraft. Removable placards on the vehicle’s side indicate the type of fuel currently carried. This particular truck is loaded with F-34 aviation fuel (JP-8), which can also power tanks and armored vehicles, making it a common fuel choice in NATO militaries.
At the front of the tank are a ladder and a spare tire, efficiently using the space between the cab and tank.
Thanks to its exceptional reliability and off-road ability, Tatra trucks are beloved by militaries across Europe.
